Fourteen things to know in Bergen County this week

Another busy week on the Bergen County beat as debate season wraps up and Election Day draws near.

Here are a few things to watch for:

1. The 3rd Annual Philippine-American Festival is underway at Overpeck County Park until 6 p.m. Sunday. There will be music, food, dancing, a duck egg eating contest and a Halloween-themed dog fashion show.

2. “Bluegrass and Cider,” the final show in a free music series goes from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the historic Wortendyke Barn Museum at 13 Pascack Road in Park Ridge. The museum will be open during intermission and after the show.

3. Bergen County celebrates Turkish Independence Day at 12:30 p.m. Monday with a flag-raising ceremony on the piazza outside the County Administration building at One Bergen County Plaza in Hackensack.

4. The Center for Hope and Safety will hold its 3rd annual candlelight vigil for domestic violence victims, survivors and their families will take place at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Van Saun County Park at 216 Forest Avenue in Paramus near parking lot 4.

This year’s vigil comes during a month when three people – including a Teaneck woman and her son and a Midland Park woman – have been killed in alleged domestic violence incidents in Bergen County.

5. The candidates for State Assembly in the 40th Legislative District will square off Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Ridgewood Town Hall at 131 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood in a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Bergen County.

6. Tuesday is the deadline for registered voters to mail an application for a vote-by-mail ballot. Voters still have until Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. to request vote-by-mail ballots in person at the County Clerk’s office in the County Administration building.

7. The County Administration building will be lit up in purple Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. for a candlelight vigil marking Recovery Month, a celebration of those who are recovering from mental health and substance abuse problems.

8. Assemblyman Scott Rumana, R-Wayne, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the West Bergen Tea Party at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Larkin House, 380 Godwin Avenue in Wyckoff. His topic “November and beyond.”

9. Bergen County Democrats will hold a fund-raiser and election rally at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Biaggi’s Restaurant, 299 Paramus Road in Paramus. Cost: $75.

10. The League of Women Voters of Northern Valley will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Closter Library, 280 High Street in Closter, to discuss a national consensus study of constitutional amendments.

11. The Bergen County Freeholders have a 4:30 p.m. work session and 7:30 p.m. public meeting on Wednesday on the fifth floor of the County Administration building. No word yet on the agenda.

12. The Montvale Chamber of Commerce will host a debate between mayor candidates at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Pascack Hills High School auditorium, at 225 W. Grand Avenue in Montvale.

13. The third and final debate among the candidates for Freeholder will take place at 7 p.m. Friday before the Korean-American community at the Fort Lee Senior Center at 319 Main Street in Fort Lee.

14. The Bergen County Clerk’s Office will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of extended hours program aimed at encouraging greater voter participation.

The office also will be open on Sunday Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
